William the Conqueror's heritage in Caen
Old Caen is home to a number of historic monuments dating back to the 11th century, bearing witness to the influence of William the Conqueror, Duke of Normandy and King of England.
An emblem of Caen's historic heritage, Caen Castle is one of the largest medieval enclosures in Europe. The castle has preserved traces of each century of its history, from the restored ramparts overlooking the keep, to William's palace, the Exchequer Room, Saint George's church and the Governors' Lodgings...
Once through the main gate, you enter what is now the grounds of the Musée de Normandie. The château also offers some of the best views of Caen from its ramparts.
Founded around 1059-1060 by William the Conqueror and his wife Matilda of Flanders, the former Benedictine Abbey of the Trinity of Caen stands at the top of the hill overlooking the confluence of the Orne and Odon rivers in Caen. Queen Matilda, founder of the Abbey, was buried in November 1083 in the choir of the abbey church, where her epitaph, engraved on a black marble slab, can still be seen.

In order to reconcile himself with the Vatican, which reproached him for marrying the Princess of Flanders, his distant cousin, William the Conqueror undertook the construction of the Abbey of Men in 1066. Begun in Romanesque style, it was completed in the 13th century in Gothic style. It includes the Saint-Étienne abbey church (11th, 13th and 17th centuries), which houses the tomb of William the Conqueror, the conventual buildings (18th century), now the Town Hall, the cloister and the Salle des Gardes (14th century), formerly a ceremonial hall and now the town council chamber.
